Amazing Beach Views to Enjoy
Snapshots of OBX’s serene shores and inviting beach paths.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a breathtaking 200-mile string of narrow barrier islands that offers a diverse tapestry of geography and history, making it a dream destination for photographers and adventurers alike. From the wide, windswept beaches of the northern reaches to the rugged, marshy sounds of the south, the landscape is constantly reshaped by the Atlantic’s rhythmic tides. Whether you are capturing the golden hour over the towering dunes of Jockey's Ridge or the serene reflection of a sunset in the Pamlico Sound, the islands provide a unique backdrop where land and sea seem to merge into one.
In the northernmost area of Corolla and Carova, the scenery takes on a legendary quality where the pavement ends and the wild territory begins. Here, geography dictates a slower pace as the Wild Horses of Corolla roam freely across the beach and tucked-away maritime forests. This area is a prime spot for wildlife photography, offering the rare opportunity to see these descendants of Spanish Mustangs grazing against the backdrop of the Atlantic. The shift from manicured vacation rentals to the untamed 4x4 Access Points creates a visual contrast that highlights the raw, natural beauty of the northern banks.
Further south, the geography transitions into a hub of historical significance at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. The high, sandy ground of Big Kill Devil Hill served as the perfect launchpad for the first flight, and today, the monument stands as a stark, majestic silhouette against the coastal sky. Photographers are drawn to the symmetry of the granite markers along the flight path and the panoramic views of the islands visible from the summit. As you move toward the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the land narrows significantly, offering dramatic views of crashing surf and the iconic "candy cane" and "diamond" patterns of the region's historic lighthouses, each acting as a sentinel over the graveyard of the Atlantic.
The OBX Photographer’s Guide: Golden Hour & Beyond
To capture the soul of the Outer Banks, you have to master the light and the landscape. Use this guide alongside our Outer Banks Maps to find these iconic shots and time your trek perfectly with our local Tide Charts.
1. The "Ghost Fleet" Sunrise
Location: Any beach along the Outer Banks National Seashore.
The Shot: Long exposure of the Atlantic surf as the sun breaks the horizon.
Pro Tip: Use our Oregon Inlet Tide Chart to find low tide. A receding tide reveals tide pools and dramatic sand patterns that reflect the pink and orange morning sky.
2. The Wild Mustangs of the North
Location: The Corolla 4x4 Access Points.
The Shot: A side-profile of a Wild Spanish Mustang grazing on a sea-oat-covered dune.
Pro Tip: Best photographed in the mid-morning or late afternoon when the light is soft. Use our Corolla NC Tide Chart to ensure there is plenty of drivable beach width for your 4x4 vehicle to reach the northernmost dunes safely.
3. The Wright Brothers Monument Silhouette
Location: Kill Devil Hills (Found via Highway 12 Mile Markers near MP 7.5).
The Shot: Stand at the base of Big Kill Devil Hill at sunset and shoot upward toward the 60-foot granite pylon as it is backlit by the fading light.
Pro Tip: This is a fantastic spot for "Blue Hour" photography just after the sun dips below the sound side of the island.
4. The Milky Way over the Atlantic
Location: Remote stretches of the Cape Hatteras ORV Access Map.
The Shot: Ultra-wide angle shots of the stars over the ocean.
Pro Tip: Because the Outer Banks has very little light pollution, especially south of Bodie Island, it is one of the best places on the East Coast for astrophotography. Check our Outer Banks Beaches guide to find the most secluded access points away from town lights.
Quick Tips for Coastal Gear
Protect Your Lens: The salt spray is constant. Bring a microfiber cloth and a UV filter to protect your glass.
Steady Your Shot: The OBX is famously windy. If using a tripod, consider a sandbag (or a small bag filled with beach sand) to keep your camera stable.
