Manteo, the island’s waterfront town, wears that history lightly: it’s a few walkable blocks of shops, docks, and a little lighthouse, with the heavyweight historic sites five minutes up the road.

Things to Do in Manteo
Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, at 1401 National Park Dr, is the site of the 1587 Lost Colony, and of a story most visitors miss entirely: the Civil War-era Freedmen’s Colony, where formerly enslaved people built a community before formal Reconstruction began. The shaded grounds are a quiet stop in their own right; check the National Park Service for current visitor center hours.
The Lost Colony plays at the Waterside Theatre next door — an outdoor symphonic drama telling the colony’s story on the shore where it happened, running summers since 1937 — the 2026 season ran June 4 through August 22, and next year’s dates are announced each winter. The Elizabethan Gardens, at 1411 National Park Dr, are formal gardens on the sound with a live oak dated to the colony era, statuary, and a find-the-fairies hunt that buys parents a peaceful hour.
The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, at 374 Airport Rd, uses timed entry, and slots sell out in season, so reserve online before you drive over. It’s home to the Graveyard of the Atlantic shark habitat and the STAR sea turtle rescue center.
Roanoke Island Festival Park, across the little bridge from the downtown waterfront, is an interactive 16th-century settlement with costumed interpreters — and the home port of the Elizabeth II, a representational 16th-century English merchant ship from the 1585 Roanoke Voyage.
The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, at the end of the downtown boardwalk at 104 Fernando St, is a 2004 reconstruction of a screw-pile sound lighthouse — photogenic, and the natural end point of a waterfront stroll.
Dare County Regional Airport, at the north end of Roanoke Island, is where the sightseeing flights leave from. Barrier Island Aviation and OBX Airplanes both fly open-cockpit WACO biplanes from there — short hops over the island up to hour-long runs past the Wright Brothers Memorial, Bodie Island Lighthouse and Oregon Inlet. Two people ride together in the front cockpit and the price is per flight rather than per person; there is a combined weight limit, so ask when you book.
