Screened 586 active NCDOT events statewide for Dare County, Hyde County and NC 12. No NC 12 incidents were open at the time of this check. Ocean overwash closes NC 12 at Buxton, Rodanthe and the Pea Island bridges on a few hours’ notice and reopens the same way, so on a windy day treat this as a starting point rather than a live feed. Ferries
Ferry status is not pulled in automatically here, and we would rather say so than guess. NCDOT runs its live departure and delay information on its own system, which is not open to outside sites. Check it directly at ferry.ncdot.gov, or call 1-800-BY-FERRY.

Recent changes
Before you drive out
An open ramp is not the same as being allowed through it. Four things the Park Service requires you to carry, and the last one is the one nobody has: a low-pressure tire gauge, a shovel, a jack, and a jack support board. A jack on soft sand digs itself in; the board spreads the load. A full-size spare, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, flashlight and tow strap are recommended but not required.
You also need an ORV permit — 10-day for $50 or annual for $120 — and tire pressure lowered below 20 psi. The Park Service words it as “less than 20 psi is recommended for most vehicles. The softer the sand, the lower the pressure needed,” so 20 is the ceiling, not the target.

Tides matter as much as ramps — a rising tide narrows the drivable strip. Outer Banks tide charts, live weather by town, and beach webcams.
