Because the barrier islands run north to south, the sun rises over the Atlantic and sets over the sounds, so the best light depends on which side of the island you are on. For sunrise, face east from any ocean beach; for sunset, head to a sound-side access, a dock, or a marsh boardwalk. Golden hour, the soft window just after sunrise and just before sunset, is when the water and sky glow, and first and last light extend the usable time a bit beyond the official sunrise and sunset. Two dates worth knowing if you are planning around the light: the earliest sunrise of the year is not the solstice but about a week before it — June 13, at 5:46 a.m. — and the latest sunset lands about a week after, on June 28 at 8:24 p.m. In December the pattern reverses: the earliest sunset comes in the first week of the month, around 4:48 p.m., a fortnight before the shortest day.
