The Salty Dog

Most of what there is to do on the Outer Banks, the dog waits in the car for. This one was built the other way round. The Salty Dog is a self-guided scavenger hunt through Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills where every stop is somewhere your dog is allowed to be, your team name is your dog’s name, and every photo challenge stars the dog. Finish, and they are certified a Salty Dog of the Outer Banks.

The route

You drive between stops, and the order is built around the heat: shade and sand while the morning is cool, the beach and the monument after, and the reward at the end. Start in the morning and you finish around lunch.

Nags Head Woods

First the shade. Nags Head Woods is maritime forest hiding behind the dunes — pines, live oaks and still ponds, cooler under the canopy than out on the open sand. Not every trail there allows dogs, and the game keeps you on the ones that do.

Jockey’s Ridge

Then the biggest thing on this coast: Jockey’s Ridge, the tallest living sand dune system on the Atlantic coast. Leashed dogs are welcome across the park. Summer sand up there gets hot enough to burn paws, which is why the game’s briefing opens with paw safety and why this stop comes early.

The beach

A stretch of beach where dogs are welcome, and a stop at the Nags Head Dog Park. One local rule decides where: Nags Head allows leashed dogs on its beaches year-round, while Kill Devil Hills closes its beach to dogs during summer daytime hours — so in season the beach stop is on the Nags Head side. The Wright Brothers Memorial

The first powered flights left this sand in December 1903, and a 60-foot granite monument now stands on top of Kill Devil Hill where the brothers launched their gliders. Leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds. The park charges admission, so plan for that.

The finish

The hunt ends the way a good dog day should: with a puppy cup at a classic Outer Banks drive-in, and a backup finish written into the game for the days it is closed. Then comes the certificate.

What you need

• Car: any car. You drive between stops and park at each one.
• Time: about half a day. Start in the morning.
• The dog: on a leash at every stop, with water and a bowl in the car.
• Hot sand: in summer, check the sand with the back of your hand before the dog walks on it. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws.
• Admission: the Wright Brothers National Memorial charges admission.
• Players: up to six people, on one phone or each on their own. The dog rides free.

How the game works

1. Buy a team pass. Your team link arrives by email within a few minutes; if it hasn’t landed in 10 minutes, check spam and promotions.
2. Go to the start any day within 90 days and open the link when you are ready. There is no booking, no guide and nobody to meet.
3. Each stop unlocks by GPS when you get there. Then come photo challenges, questions you answer from what is actually in front of you, and points.
4. If your phone won’t share its location, the game lets you place yourself on the map by hand, so nobody gets stuck.

Questions people ask

Is every stop dog-friendly?

Yes. Every stop is somewhere dogs are allowed, so there are no leave-them-in-the-car moments. Dogs stay leashed, and in summer the beach stop is on the Nags Head side because Kill Devil Hills closes its beach to dogs during the day.

Can we play in the summer heat?

Yes, but start in the morning. The route puts the shade and the dune early for that reason, and the briefing covers hot sand before you set out.

Do we need four-wheel drive?

No. Any car works. There is no driving on the sand.

Does the Wright Brothers Memorial cost extra?

The National Park Service charges admission to the memorial. Leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds.
