Christmas on the Outer Banks: The Lights, the Events, and What’s Open

The short version

Christmas on the Outer Banks is a lit-up Manteo waterfront, a garden with more than a million lights on Roanoke Island, a crab-pot tree in Duck, Santa arriving on a fire truck, and sixty miles of beach with nobody on it. The National Weather Service station at Cape Hatteras averages a 59°F high and a 45°F low in December, the ocean at the Duck research pier is right around 50 by New Year’s, and the sun is down before 5 pm all month, so the shape of the week is the beach in the middle of the day and the lights after dark.

The dates that matter in 2026: WinterLights at the Elizabethan Gardens runs on select nights from November 20 through December 29; Manteo’s tree lighting and parade have been the first Friday and Saturday of December for years, which puts them on December 4 and 5; Duck lights its tree the same Saturday; Wright Brothers National Memorial marks the first flight on Thursday, December 17; and Manteo’s New Year’s Eve runs on the waterfront from 5 pm to the midnight fireworks. Everything below is in date order, with what is open and closed on Christmas Day itself.

The caveat is the same as any winter week here. A December nor’easter can put ocean overwash on Highway 12 on Hatteras Island and close beach ramps for a day or two, and a strong wind is what makes a 59° day feel cold. Give any beach plan a two-day window and take the calm day when it comes.

Christmas lights on the Outer Banks

WinterLights at the Elizabethan Gardens, Manteo. The big one: the ten-acre garden next to Fort Raleigh lit end to end, an open-air fire, hot cocoa at the Gingerbread House, and Santa from 6 to 8 pm on every night it runs. The 2026 nights are November 20, 21, 25, 27 and 28, then December 2–5, 9–12, 16–19, 21–23 and 26–29, 6 to 9 pm. Tickets are $22 for ages 13 and up, $14 for ages 3 to 12, free for 2 and under, and $6 for a well-behaved dog; they are sold online and at the gate, the Gardens recommend buying ahead, and they are not refunded unless the Gardens cancel for weather (a cancellation notice goes out by 2 pm). Overflow parking is at the Fort Raleigh lot, with a shuttle on select nights. Note the two dark stretches: no lights on Thanksgiving night, and none on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

The Manteo waterfront. The town tree stands on the waterfront by the old courthouse and is lit on the first Friday of December — December 4 in 2026, around 6 pm, with hot chocolate and holiday music from local kids. Downtown stays decorated through New Year’s, and it is the easiest lights stop on the Banks: park once, walk the waterfront, eat in town. The town’s events page carries the times.

Duck. Duck’s tree is a crab-pot tree in Town Park on Duck Road, lit at the town’s Yuletide Celebration on the first Saturday of December — 3 to 5 pm in recent years, with live music, treats, and Santa’s arrival.

Jockey’s Ridge. The state park’s solar-powered Christmas tree stands on the dunes across from Jockey’s Ridge Crossing in Nags Head and is lit at 5 pm during Kites with Lights on Saturday, November 28, 2026, when Kitty Hawk Kites flies holiday-lit kites 19 to 30 feet across over the dunes from 4 to 7 pm. Free; park at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing, not on the shoulder.

Corolla. Historic Corolla Village lights up for Corolla Village Christmas on Thanksgiving weekend (Friday and Saturday evening in 2025), and the Whalehead mansion in Historic Corolla Park runs candlelight Christmas tours on Friday and Saturday evenings from Thanksgiving weekend into mid-December (5:30 pm starts in 2025; reservations required, and they sell out). The Currituck Beach Lighthouse grounds are open, but the climb is closed from December 1 until spring.

Neighborhood displays. OBX Today publishes a map each December of the big residential light displays from the beach towns to the Currituck mainland, several of them synced to music, some collecting for the Beach Food Pantry. It is the list to check before you go hunting; the standouts move around from year to year.

Christmas events in date order

  • Friday and Saturday, November 27–28 — Christmas in Corolla. The Christmas Craft Village on the Whalehead grounds (Friday, 11 am to 4 pm and free in past years, with local makers, food and Santa), Corolla Village Christmas in Historic Corolla Village on both evenings, and the first Whalehead candlelight tours.
  • Saturday, November 28 — Kites with Lights, Jockey’s Ridge State Park, 4 to 7 pm, solar tree lit at 5. Hangin’ with Santa at the Kitty Hawk Kites store across the road on the 27th and 28th.
  • Friday, December 4 — Manteo tree lighting on the waterfront, about 6 pm.
  • Saturday, December 5 — Manteo Christmas Parade, downtown, 10:30 am start, Santa on a fire truck. Duck Yuletide Celebration, Town Park, 3 to 5 pm, with the crab-pot tree lighting.
  • Thursday, December 17 — Wright Brothers Day at Wright Brothers National Memorial. A morning ceremony at the monument on the anniversary of the 1903 flight, with a wreath-laying by descendants of the witnesses and a replica 1903 Flyer on the grounds. In 2025 the program began at 8:30 am, the entrance fee was waived for the day, and the moment of the first flight was marked at 10:35. The 2026 program posts on the park’s site in early December.
  • Through Tuesday, December 29 — WinterLights, with the last four nights on December 26–29, which makes it the one big thing running the week between Christmas and New Year’s.
  • Thursday, December 31 — Manteo’s New Year’s Eve on the waterfront: music from 5 pm, an early ball drop for children (8 pm in recent years), bands until midnight, and fireworks over Shallowbag Bay at midnight. Free.

Christmas Day: what’s open and what isn’t

Closed December 25: Wright Brothers National Memorial (the only day of the year it closes), Jockey’s Ridge State Park (the same), and the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). The lighthouses are closed for climbing all winter anyway — Currituck Beach’s last climbs are November 30, Bodie Island closed in October, and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is closed for all of 2026 for restoration. The lighthouse guide covers what you can see from outside.

Open: the beach, all of it, every day. Cape Hatteras National Seashore is on 24-hour access with the National Park Service ORV permit, the Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills town beaches are open to 4x4s with a town permit through April 30, and the Carova beach needs no parking permit until May 8, 2027. The Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry runs its winter timetable, first come, first served. Most restaurants close on Christmas Day and many are on winter hours around it; call before you drive out, especially on Hatteras and Ocracoke.

The ferry and the holidays. The Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry is still free over the holidays. The state budget has every North Carolina ferry route tolled from January 1, 2027 (the proposed rate for a car is $10 each way), and as of October the state Board of Transportation was asking the legislature to push that back to April 1. The ferry guide will carry whichever it turns out to be.

The beach at Christmas

This is the part the lights crowd misses. Between Christmas and New Year’s the beach is as empty as it gets, the Corolla herd is on the Carova beach and its sand roads year-round, and every ORV ramp on the Banks is open. The practical bits: a true 4x4 with the tires aired down; the beach is the road north of Corolla, with no permit in winter, a 35 mph limit, slower near people and horses, and a 50-foot rule for the horses themselves; and the Park Service permit for Hatteras Island and Ocracoke is sold online. The 4x4 beach access map shows every area, and the Carova Beach guide and the wild horses guide cover the north end.

Weather for the week: 59° afternoons on average, hard freezes rare, and a northwest wind behind a front the thing that makes it feel cold. The ocean is right around 50, so it is a walking and fishing beach — the striped bass run is on (our December surf fishing guide has the month), and a December nor’easter delivers the shells the winter shelling guide is about. Sunset is 4:48 to 4:58 pm, so the beach is a middle-of-the-day plan and the lights are the evening plan. Live conditions by town are on the weather page and the water temperature page.

Month by month: March · April · October · November · December · the whole year. Holiday weeks: Thanksgiving.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Outer Banks worth visiting at Christmas?

For a quiet one, yes. The lights are real — WinterLights alone is more than a million of them — Manteo and Duck each do a tree lighting, Manteo adds a parade, the first-flight anniversary is on the 17th, and the beach is open and empty. It is not a swim trip: 59° days, an ocean near 50, and sunset before 5 pm.

What is open on Christmas Day on the Outer Banks?

The beach, the Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry on its winter timetable, and whichever restaurants post holiday hours — call first. Wright Brothers National Memorial, Jockey’s Ridge and the aquarium on Roanoke Island are all closed December 25, and WinterLights is dark on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, then back December 26 through 29.

Where are the Christmas lights on the Outer Banks?

WinterLights at the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo (ticketed, select nights November 20 to December 29), the Manteo waterfront tree, Duck’s crab-pot tree in Town Park, the solar tree on the dunes at Jockey’s Ridge, Historic Corolla Village, and the residential displays OBX Today maps each December.

Are there fireworks on New Year’s Eve on the Outer Banks?

Yes, in Manteo. The town’s free New Year’s Eve runs on the waterfront from 5 pm with live music, an early ball drop for children, and fireworks over Shallowbag Bay at midnight.

Can you drive on the beach over Christmas week?

Everywhere driving is ever allowed. Cape Hatteras National Seashore is on 24-hour access with the Park Service ORV permit, Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills are open with a town permit, and the Carova beach needs no permit until May. You need a true 4x4 and aired-down tires; the beach is the road north of Corolla.
