The short version
Thanksgiving on the Outer Banks is a beach-house week at off-season rates, a handful of restaurants doing a proper turkey dinner, the Christmas season switching on the day after, and the emptiest beaches of the year. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26 in 2026. The National Weather Service station at Cape Hatteras averages a 66°F high and a 52°F low for November, the ocean at the Duck research pier is in the high 50s by the end of the month, and the sun sets about 4:50 pm, so dinner is early or the beach walk comes first.
Open on the day: Wright Brothers National Memorial and Jockey’s Ridge (both close only on Christmas Day), every beach on the Banks, and the Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry. Closed: the aquarium on Roanoke Island, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse climb, and most restaurants that are not serving Thanksgiving dinner. The weekend after is the busiest of the off-season — Christmas in Corolla, Kites with Lights at Jockey’s Ridge, and the first nights of WinterLights in Manteo.
The caveat is nor’easter season. A three-day blow can close beach ramps, put ocean overwash on Highway 12 on Hatteras Island and cancel a ferry run; the bright, still day behind it is the beach day of the year. Hurricane season runs through November 30, so if you are renting a house, read the hurricane guide too.
Thanksgiving dinner on the Outer Banks
Most Outer Banks restaurants close on Thanksgiving Day. The ones that open serve a set dinner or a buffet, take reservations, and fill up, so book before you drive down. Menus for 2026 post in early November; this is who served in 2025, from last year’s listings:
- Duck: the Lifesaving Station at the Sanderling (four-course set menu), Red Sky (buffet), and NC Coast Grill & Bar.
- Kill Devil Hills: Jolly Roger and Captain George’s, both all-you-can-eat Thanksgiving spreads.
- Nags Head: Basnight’s Lone Cedar (buffet) and Mulligan’s Grille.
- To take back to the house, ordered ahead: Kelly’s Outer Banks Catering in Kill Devil Hills, The Fresh Market in Nags Head, Harris Teeter in Corolla, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills, Outer Banks Boil Company in Corolla and Kitty Hawk (a seafood-boil Thanksgiving is a thing here), and Sooey’s BBQ in Corolla and Nags Head. Several of these are closed on the day itself, so the pickup is Wednesday.
If you are cooking in the house, shop on Wednesday; holiday hours vary store to store.
What’s open on Thanksgiving Day
- Wright Brothers National Memorial, Kill Devil Hills: open 9 am to 5 pm. The park closes only on Christmas Day.
- Jockey’s Ridge State Park, Nags Head: open 8 am to 6 pm in November, visitor center 9 to 4. Closed only on Christmas Day.
- The beach: every beach on the Banks is open to a 4x4 — Cape Hatteras National Seashore on 24-hour access with the National Park Service ORV permit since November 16, the Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills town beaches with a town permit, and the Carova beach with no parking permit at all until May 8, 2027. Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores do not allow beach driving. The 4x4 beach access map shows every area.
- The Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry: running its winter timetable, first come, first served, and free through the holidays. The state budget has tolls starting January 1, 2027, and as of October the state Board of Transportation was asking the legislature to delay that to April; the ferry guide will have the answer.
- Closed: the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day) and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse climb (closed Thanksgiving Day; its last climbs of the year are November 30). WinterLights is dark on Thanksgiving night; it runs the Wednesday before and the Friday and Saturday after.
Thanksgiving weekend: the Christmas season starts Friday
- Friday, November 27 — Christmas in Corolla. The Christmas Craft Village on the Whalehead grounds in Historic Corolla Park (11 am to 4 pm and free in past years, with local makers, food and Santa), Corolla Village Christmas in Historic Corolla Village on Friday and Saturday evening, and the first of the Whalehead candlelight Christmas tours (Fridays and Saturdays into mid-December, reservations required). Hangin’ with Santa at Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head runs Friday and Saturday.
- Friday and Saturday, November 27–28 — WinterLights at the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, 6 to 9 pm, $22 for ages 13 and up, $14 for ages 3 to 12, Santa until 8. It also runs Wednesday the 25th; it does not run on Thanksgiving night.
- Saturday, November 28 — Kites with Lights at Jockey’s Ridge: holiday-lit kites over the dunes 4 to 7 pm and the park’s solar Christmas tree lit at 5. Free; park at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing.
- The following weekend, December 4–5 — Manteo’s tree lighting and parade and Duck’s Yuletide Celebration. The Christmas guide has the whole season in date order.
The beach on Thanksgiving
The walk after dinner is the Outer Banks tradition that needs no reservation. Sunset is about 4:50 pm on Thanksgiving, so the walk is before dinner or the dinner is early. The beaches are as empty as they get: the summer crowd is gone, the permit season on the Carova beach ended in September, and from November 16 every ORV route on the Seashore is open around the clock.
Thanksgiving week is also an easy week to find the horses. The Corolla herd lives on the Carova beach and its sand roads year-round, and with the traffic gone the sightings get easier; it’s best near low tide, when the beach is wide and firm. You need a true 4x4 with the tires aired down — the beach is the road north of Corolla. The wild horses guide covers where to look and the rules, and the Carova Beach guide covers the drive.
Weather for the week: the November normals are 66° afternoons and 52° nights, Thanksgiving week runs a little cooler than that, a jacket is standard after 3 pm, and the wind is what you dress for. The ocean is in the high 50s — wetsuit water for surfers and wader water for the striped bass anglers, who are on the beach this week; our November surf fishing guide has the species. Live readings are on the weather page and the water temperature page.
Renting a house for Thanksgiving week
Thanksgiving is a house week here: a family takes a big house at off-season rates and cooks. Two things to know before you book. If the house is in Carova, you need a true 4x4 to reach it — the pavement ends at Corolla and the last miles are beach, and the Carova Beach guide explains the drive. And if a named storm shows up in the forecast, the first half of November is still hurricane season; the hurricane guide covers what that means for a rental.
Month by month: March · April · October · November · December · the whole year. Holiday weeks: Christmas and New Year’s.

Yes. Wright Brothers National Memorial and Jockey’s Ridge keep normal hours (both close only on Christmas Day), every beach is open to a 4x4, the Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry runs, and a handful of restaurants serve Thanksgiving dinner by reservation.
