The short version
New Year’s Eve on the Outer Banks is one town party, a string of bar and restaurant parties, and a lot of dark, quiet beach. The town party is on the Manteo waterfront from 6 pm to midnight, and its fireworks go off early, at 8 pm, so the kids see them. New Year’s Day is a ranger-led walk on the dunes at Jockey’s Ridge, a cold-water plunge if someone organizes one, and the first drive of the year on an empty beach.
Dress for winter. The National Weather Service station at Cape Hatteras averages a 59°F high and a 45°F low in December, and January runs a few degrees colder. The ocean at the Duck research pier is right around 50°F at New Year’s. The sun sets at 4:58 pm on New Year’s Eve and rises at about 7:14 am on New Year’s Day at Kill Devil Hills.
One thing may change on January 1, 2027: the ferries. State law starts tolls on every North Carolina ferry route that day unless the legislature agrees to a delay. Details are below.
New Year’s Eve in Manteo
The Town of Manteo’s New Year’s Eve party fills the downtown waterfront on Thursday, December 31, 2026, from 6 pm to midnight, and it has been free in past years. There is one fireworks show, over the water at 8 pm, and then live music carries the night to the midnight countdown. Last year’s version had a DJ from 6, glow-in-the-dark mini golf and games for kids in George Washington Creef Park, food trucks, and drinks from the downtown businesses in the town’s social district.
In 2025 the parking was free at the College of The Albemarle campus and Manteo Elementary School on US 64, with golf-cart shuttles to the waterfront and some downtown streets closed for the night. The town’s events page carries the 2026 details as they are announced. It is a cold, damp waterfront after dark, so bring a hat.
WinterLights at the Elizabethan Gardens, also in Manteo, is dark on New Year’s Eve. Its last nights in 2026 are December 26 through 29, and the Christmas page has the details.
Everywhere else, New Year’s Eve is at the bars and restaurants, and the lineup changes every year: live bands and midnight toasts in the beach towns, set dinners from Duck to Hatteras Island. Outer Banks This Week runs a New Year’s roundup in the last week of December. Book dinner ahead, because plenty of places keep short winter hours.
New Year’s Day
The First Day Hike at Jockey’s Ridge. North Carolina’s state parks hold ranger-led First Day Hikes on January 1. At Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head, the 2026 hike started at 10 am from the visitor center’s back deck and took about 45 minutes on the dunes, and the park ran a Last Hike of the year at 10 am on December 31. Check the park’s events list for the 2027 times.
A plunge. New Year’s Day plunges come and go with whoever organizes them. On January 1, 2026, the Buxton Civic Association held its first, at Ramp 43, and 50 to 70 people went in. The water is about 50°F: go in with a crowd, in daylight, and come right back out.
The first sunrise. The sun comes up over the ocean at about 7:14 am at Kill Devil Hills on New Year’s Day, a minute or two later at Corolla and a few minutes earlier at Cape Hatteras. Any beach access facing the ocean works. The sunrise and sunset times page has every town.
What’s open. Wright Brothers National Memorial and Jockey’s Ridge State Park close only on Christmas Day, so both are open on New Year’s Day, and the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, which closes only on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, keeps its 9 am to 5 pm hours. The lighthouses are closed for climbing all winter. Restaurants are the gamble on January 1, so call before you drive out, especially on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke.
The beach over New Year’s
Every beach where driving is allowed is open to it in winter. Cape Hatteras National Seashore is on 24-hour access through April 30 with the National Park Service ORV permit, which is sold online. The Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills town beaches are open to 4x4s with a town permit through April 30. North of Corolla, where Highway 12 ends, the beach is the road to Carova: no permit until May 8, 2027, 35 mph, slower near people, and 50 feet from the wild horses. Take a true 4x4 and air the tires down. The 4x4 beach access map shows every area, and the Carova Beach guide covers the north end.
In January it is a walking and fishing beach, not a swimming one. Striped bass season is on (the January surf fishing guide has the month), and a winter nor’easter is what brings in the shells the winter shelling guide is about. Live conditions by town are on the weather page and the water temperature page.
The ferry on January 1, 2027
The Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry is free through New Year’s Eve. The state budget passed in June has every North Carolina ferry route charging a toll from January 1, 2027, and the toll proposed for Hatteras to Ocracoke is $10 one way. On October 8 the state Board of Transportation asked the legislature to push the start back to at least April 1. The ferry guide carries whichever way it goes, so check it before a New Year’s Day crossing.
Month by month: March · April · October · November · December · the whole year. Holiday weeks: Thanksgiving · Christmas.
